Rolling Thunder® Chapter 11 was formed in 2009 by three members from Florida Chapter 7 who lived in the Tampa Bay area. As Chapter 7 is a 2 hour ride North of Tampa, we formed our chapter closer to home. We held our first Board Meeting on 21 Nov 2009, our first General Membership Meeting on 5 Dec 2009, and now have over 21 active members.
MacDill Air Force Base is the largest employer in Hillsborough County. There is a huge contingent of active duty and retired service members from all branches of the military that live in the Tampa Bay area. Our chapter headquarters in Brandon, Florida, a suburb of Tampa, is in the middle of that population center.
We participate in local charities, veteranís events, veteranís organizations and introduce ourselves to local motorcycle groups and organizers. Many of our members are also liaisons to the Hillsborough County Veterans Council and Vet-Net, a veteran networking group consisting of veteran owned business owners and organizations.
Chapter 11 is focused on POW/MIA awareness issues and veterans affairs. Our accomplishments include POW flag raisings at various business locations including the Tampa Sports Authority, supporting veteran motorcycle organizations and other veterans groupsí toy runs and fund raising activities. We are particularly proud to have assisted in a series of three events to raise money to build a custom motorcycle and sidecar for a Special Forces soldier totally paralyzed from a gunshot wound in Afghanistan.
Our major fund raiser is our annual POW/MIA Awareness Charity Golf Tournament, held in spring each year. With these funds we have met pursued our mission by legislative actions and have made donations to various veterans service organizations and causes such as The James Haley Hospital Recreational Services, The Fisher House both Tampa and Bay Pines, Liberty Manor for Vets, My Warriors Place, The Ride Home, Wreaths Across America, donations for needy vets on an ongoing basis.
